Dr. Anjali Mishra has had a keen interest and passion for dance since the beginning, which was encouraged by her parents. Anjali Mishra is the first Indian senior lecturer and performing artist in Sri Lanka. She has been performing and instructing students for many years at the University of Visual and Performing Arts, Colombo 7, Sri Lanka.
She was trained in Kathak by the great Guru Pt. Barman Lal, was one of the best dancers in the Raigarh Court. Also, she could further thorough her strengths in dancing by a few other doyens in the field such as Prof. Mandavi Singh ( former Vice Chancellor I.K.S. University- India), Dr. Jyoti Bakshi ( former Head. of Dance Dept. I.K.S. University- India), Dr. Chetna Jyotishi Byohar (Former Director, Kathak Kendra, Delhi), Late Guru Surendra Saikia (kathak Kendra, Lucknow) and Meena Singh, Raigarh Gharana, India. She is the first Indian to receive a grant from the Sri Lankan Govt to pursue a PhD in Critical Analysis of Indian Classical Dance and Sri Lankan Dance’.
From 2002 to date she has been involved with many national and international Universities and institutes as a lecturer, and as a resource person in seminars and conferences so far, she has developed her efforts in teaching, choreographing, and staging solo, group, and dance drama performances for her students. In 2007, she became a permanent lecturer in the Department of Indian and Asian Dance and is the first Indian to hold the post of Head of Department in 2014. She holds many certifications as a Certified Yoga Instructor, Spiritual Healer, Tarot Reader, and Counsellor. Since 2019 She has been involved with Dance Movement Therapy and many articles written in prestigious journals as well as practical sessions with Dancers and non-dancers.
Anjali firmly believes in the perfection of basic techniques and strong foundations. Using her renowned Gurus' teachings and experience of performing on the international stage, she added her flavour to each item she taught and performed. Staying true to the basics, she remains open to novel ideas and innovation, choreographing expressions and movements to some truly unique pieces.
Anjali as a teacher instills respect and appreciation in her students for the art form while nurturing their style. She was the first to organize an international dance festival, bringing together all the dance forms on one stage in 2017.
Apart from these creative activities, her contribution has also been in story writing, poetry, and Event Hosting
